- Keep your splint or cast dry. Moisture weakens the cast and damp padding next to the skin can cause irritation. Use two layers of plastic or purchase waterproof shields to keep your cast or splint dry during bathing or showering. Even if the cast is covered, do not submerge it, or hold it under running water. Even a small pinhole in the cast cover can cause the injury to get soaked.
- Cast tightness. The cast should fit snug. Be sure to continue elevating to help reduce swelling. If you begin to feel as if the cast is too tight, develop numbness or tingling in your foot or toes please contact the office immediately. If the cast becomes too loose, please contact the office to have a new one placed.
- Keep dirt, sand, and powders away from the openings/inside of your splint or cast.
- Padding. Do not pull out the padding from your splint or cast. The underlying fiberglass often has sharp edges and may cut your skin.
- If the cast feels as if it is rubbing or burning, especially if you have a surgical incision, please contact the office immediately.
- Itching. Do not stick objects such as coat hangers inside the splint or cast to scratch itching skin. Do not apply powders or deodorants to itching skin. Itching is normal, especially while surgical incisions are healing.
- Trimming. Do not break off rough edges of the cast or trim the cast before asking your doctor.
- Skin. Inspect the skin around your cast. If your skin becomes red or raw around the cast, contact your doctor.
- DO NOT REMOVE YOUR CAST, if you feel that your cast needs to be changed, please contact the office and we will change it out.
